Diplomatic Message from [MOOSE] to [EVERYONE]: It was a bitterly cold morning one late September when I was first introduced to "moosing." We set off into the darkness of the predawn, rumbling down a rugged back road. As we slowly drove by openings in the young forest of poplar and birch, our eyes anxiously scanned for the looming form of a moose. Suddenly, a whisper broke the silence: "There's one -- over on the left." We ground to a halt, and with the switching off of the headlights the darkness quickly swallowed us. When my eyes finally adjusted to the dim of the early morn, I could only discern the pale trunks of poplars perforating the gloom. From "Moose Country" by Michael W.P. Anonymous Diplomatic Message to [EVERYONE]: Be careful, I believe we have at least one player who is trying to ferment a war between others, so he can sit back and smile as he watches each of us squander our limited resources in a war no one will win. Why - so when the dust settles, he can laugh at our folly as he picks up the pieces for points and to win the game. Beware he who lets you do his dirty work for him. Beware him of the "clean hands." Diplomatic Message from [NEUROLEPT] to [EVERYONE]: YOHO It's a pirates life for me!ZZZZZZZ Anonymous Diplomatic Message to [EVERYONE]: Hey Everybody! Was that thunder I heard outside? Naw. We finally got it right you took the fleet I was going to capture the world after you left. But instead you capture the world, take the loose key, drop a P ship so I can not capture it. Then send a pirate(NEUROLEPT) to capture my key. Diplomatic Message from [NEUROLEPT] to [EVERYONE]: As the SW-Z1292 self appointed pain in the Butt I must ask - HOW AM I DOING! Diplomatic Message from [TARTAN] to [EVERYONE]: Someone call the Starweb doctor, this game is in dire need of a Neurolept-ectomy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- QUESTIONS - Can anyone answer these? Q: What is the theoretical maximum number of mines for a world? A: The answer is in the rulebook and is 31 although I've never seen one with more than 10. More on this in the Correspondence section. Darry Jennings asks: Hello, Can I build and drop a PPB on the same turn. Or do I build one turn then drop the next? Thanks Darry John Galt answers: You have to build it on an earlier turn. But building the bomb is not one of the mutually exclusive orders, so you can build it while the fleet moves to the target world. John Shannonhouse adds: It has to be built and available BEFORE dropping. It can't be done the same time. Of course, Darry Jennings could be asking if a key with 26+ ships AND a PBB could drop the current PBB while building a new one. I believe this IS possible, though I have never tried to do it. John Editor: I've done that - it's possible but it's not really necessary. After all, there is no point in PBBing a world a second time and you could build it the following turn as you move to your target. New Question You are a merchant. You are at a HW with 60 metal but the HW already has 255 metal stockpiled. If you drop your metal - what is the metal count next turn AND how many points will you gain (are all the metal counted when you hit the maximum)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- STARWEB EMAIL DISCUSSION GROUP - is now available on the web. Look for our new MAPPER'S SECTION on the SEDG Web Page. http://www.accessv.com/~somnos/sedg.htm ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FEATURE - THE SWAP CORNER Turnsheets, Filters and Sorts While it is difficult to show you the output of the Starweb Analyzer in the pages of the SEDG, it being a graphical presentation of Starweb and the newsletter a text based medium. I have endeavored to show you some of the capabilities of this marvelous utility. Each example has been shortened (not all worlds, keys, art shown) to try and be brief. The following example is a combined turnsheet. This compiles all the information you have from your turnsheet and those of players who have supplied theirs to you. Worlds that have never been seen by you before have a '*' in the left margin. Old worlds from previous turnsheets are remembered and the turn they were observed is identified to the left of the world number. I filtered all worlds within ring 3 of the Utopia HW that were owned by Utopia. Then sorted them in predicted ascending order of metal (calculates in the metal added due to mines). This is a good way to find your best metal stockpiles. You can include worlds owned by other players if you've gifted your worlds away. W96 is your best stockpile here and note W72, the HW is listed last. METAL PRODUCTION (MINES) AND THE TURNS NUMBER. Each mine produces one metal per turn. It is stockpiled on the world unless picked up by a fleet. The maximum MINES for a world is 255. You can stockpile up to 255 metal at any one world. You must have population at the world not building with industry in order for the mine to produce its metal. 31. MISCELLANEOUS. The maximum # of mines for a world is 31. For all other quantities of items, the maximum is 255. Since I'never seen anything bigger than 11 mines, I can't say for sure. The limit for everything is 255 (which means they can store the number in 1 byte of space). Why they would actually limit the mines to a lesser number (meaning more programming) is beyond me. Rick, any comment? Paul Rick Loomis replies: How very odd. The PRINTED rules say 31 in both places. The online rules have a typo, which I have now fixed. The original program was written for a computer with very limited (and expensive) memory. I believe Steve kept track of the number of mines in the same byte of memory that he was also keeping some other number (perhaps the ownership of the world.) The memory was 16 bit core memory, and only 5 bits were needed to keep track of the number of mines, four more bits would have been sufficient to keep track of the owner, and so on. I guess when Steve rewrote the program for a modern computer where memory used was irrelevant; we kept the 31 mine limit because there was no reason to change the rule that was written. Originally it was indeed more programming, but it used less memory, which was more critical. Rick Jack Fulmer writes: Hi Elliot. In SEDG #65 Lin Goldstein wrote: "In the old days, before the advent of megaalliances (such advent being the reason why I no longer play Starweb),..." I would like to strongly urge Lin and others to try playing anonymous Starweb. As I've written in previous volumes of SEDG anonymous Starweb is a lot of fun. In addition it is wholly without mega-alliances and what has been called the "merchant race". True, anonymous Starweb lacks all of the open diplomacy of regular Starweb. However, it does allow for minimal communication by actions as described in earlier volumes of SEDG. Anonymous Starweb rewards strategy, tactics and logistical expertise rather than negotiating and/or communication skills. This is even more true in anonymous muti- Starweb. Does finding the time for correspondence rather than the cost of turns limit how many Starweb games you play? If so then playing anonymous Starweb allows you to play more games of Starweb at the same time. Anonymous Starweb is an amazingly different game but played with the same rules except for communications. Try it Lin! You may like it. Regards... Jack Well, that's it for Volume 66.
